Practical advice for keeping your Treasure Valley lawn healthy year-round.
Start mowing when your lawn reaches 3 inches — usually mid-April in the Treasure Valley. Set your blade high (3–3.5") to encourage deep root growth.
Water deeply 2–3 times per week rather than daily shallow watering. Early morning (before 8am) reduces evaporation in Idaho's dry summer heat.
Continue mowing into October, gradually lowering blade height. Aerate in September to relieve compaction from summer foot traffic.
Apply pre-emergent in early March before soil temps hit 55°F. Idaho's alkaline soil makes proper timing critical for crabgrass prevention.
